The Digital Magazine Newsstand of the Future

Apple will certainly provide us a clean magazine newsstand experience

The digital magazine newsstand from Apple(TM) in iOS 5 provides the proper app based usability to iPod, iPhone, and iPad mobile and tablet devices. The newsstand app brings publication subscription functions to a managed newspaper and magazine applications shelf allowing for convenient access & visibility to the most recent publication issues.  Post - Digital Newsstands

But the future digital newsstand will need to be as open as the magazine software and tools used to create cross media publications that can be accessed by any device - smartphone or tablet magazine format.

This week the Kindle Fire showed us one more magazine newsstand foundation that will probably put more interest and effort into their periodicals.

Let's just hope they make the magazine publishing software tools easy for all publishers to use and not just those largest publishers capable of signing major deals.  The original publisher software tools and information for publishing to the Kindle left magazine developers wondering if they really understood the market.

Drupal CMS for Magazine Publishing

Post about WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal open source magazine CMS software solutions .

While open source web content management systems contain “no cost” for the CMS software itself, it’s important to understand that there are still costs associated with the planning, design, development, and deployment of OS powered magazine websites. Open source solutions must also be managed, hosted and maintained.

iPad Magazine Media

As the Magazine Publishers of America changes to a new tagline and logo “MPA – The Association of Magazine Media” I wanted to share the magazine media minute featuring cross media magazine branding on the iPad.

While keeping a periodic digital paginated magazine structure you can begin to see the tremendous potential of tablet magazines. The periodic digital content is augmented with daily news.

Tablet Magazine Edition Software

Adobe’s new digital magazine workflow is destined to change the way we design magazines forever. With rich multimedia, and pages based magazine interactivity, the new digital magazine design process will set the bar for all publishers that wish to cross the digital chasm and play in the new world of tablet magazine editions. [Adobe Video]

Magazine publishers will begin to see dozens and then hundreds of other iPad or tablet magazines and realize that they too must invest in the people, software, and workflows to grow their digital magazine brand. The growth will mimick the rise of digital magazine editions which is now a brand extension (perhaps on multiple platfoms) for most publishers. The rapid digital magazine growth accelerated just 3 years ago with publishers using one of a dozen core digital platform service providers and also a few in-house digital magazine builds.
